Certain local code requirements mandate that you allow for up to a 6 foot clear space -- un-sod space -- surrounding your swimming pool. Vertical supports tend to penetrate deep into the ground and raise the area immediately surrounding the support, so the surface becomes uneven. Use horizontal support, such as thin plywood panels, beneath the vertical supports. This ensures the clear area remains level when the pool is installed. The Level Ground Pool website notes that you should never let plywood come in contact with your pool liner, since plywood can tear it.
