Spread the news of your new arrival with handmade baby announcements

Combine scrapbooking and crafting techniques to announce your new baby in style. When you hand craft your own baby announcements, you can tailor them to match your own personal style and interests. You can create as many announcements as you need to send to family and friends, and keep a few for framing or for your baby scrapbook. Most craft and scrapbooking stores offer baby-themed papers and embellishments in a wide variety of styles. Create your announcements "assembly-line" style if you need to make a lot of them, or make one original and have it duplicated for every person on your list.

  1. Cards

    • Use scrapbooking supplies, specialty papers and embellishments to craft your own paper announcements. Include a photo of your new arrival, framed with all of her important statistics. Cards are the best format for baby announcements if you plan on mailing them; other types may be too bulky to mail.

    Digital Announcements

    • Create your own baby announcement using your computer and photo software. Use a pre-existing template or create your own. Once your announcement is complete, you can instantly send it to everyone on your list. Digital announcements are not limited to static photos; you can incorporate videos, music and slide shows of your new baby as well. If you are computer savvy, this is the least expensive way to spread the word about your new arrival.

    Candy Announcements

    • Use pre-made candy as a sweet way to announce the birth of your new baby. Create chocolate bar wrappers printed with all the pertinent details using scrapbook supplies or a computer, then wrap and pass out. You can also make cards to attach to lollipops, candy cigars and other sweet items. Candy birth announcements are better to pass out in person; their bulky weight and odd size may make them expensive to mail.

    Novelty Announcements

    • Create baby announcements using more novel items that relate to your favorite handcraft. If you enjoy making soap, then make gentle baby soap and wrap with the announcement, or make a novelty-shaped soap like a baby bottle or rubber ducky. If you love to garden, then use real seeds, seeded paper or even live plants as part of your announcement. Painted terra cotta pots can hold small potted plants, with the details painted on the pot or attached to a plant tag. Knitters or crocheters can pass the last few weeks waiting for baby's arrival by making dozens of tiny hat or bootie ornaments to attach birth details to.
