Science Projects on Hydrogen Bombs

Science Projects on Hydrogen Bombs thumbnail
Hydrogen Bombs are powerful destructive forces that use pressure and repulsion to generate effect.

Hydrogen bombs are destructive weapons of war that are capable of inflicting massive amounts of damage. However, the amount of science that goes into the creation of hydrogen bombs is very impressive. This being the case, there are many opportunities for science projects relating to hydrogen bombs for students.

  1. How an H-Bomb Works

    • Have your students do research on the hydrogen bomb. This will require them to do some reading about the history of the hydrogen bomb, the makeup of the bomb as well as how it is used. Then, after they have done research, instruct them to draw up a diagram on how the hydrogen bomb works. This can be an actual model of the bomb or just a picture of the bomb. For students that are not as artistically inclined, you can have them write a report about how the bomb works and what it takes to make one.

What Happens When an H-Bomb Detonates?

    • This is a potentially creative assignment in which you can task your students to research the hydrogen bomb and then prepare a demonstration on how it works. This can be something as simple as detonating a water balloon to something as complex as making a model of a hydrogen bomb. Just instruct your students to use their creativity to best depict how they think the hydrogen bomb explosion works.

    Explanation of Nuclear Fission

    • The hydrogen bomb relies heavily on a principal called "nuclear fission" for the bomb to work. Have your students create a project or presentation to help demonstrate how nuclear fission works, particularly in the hydrogen bomb. Students can draft a diagram on the process of nuclear fission and how it works to promote the explosion in a hydrogen bomb. Have the students work in small groups to make the project more intricate and expansive.

Long Term Effects of an H-Bomb

    • Study the effects of hydrogen bombs on other aspects of the environment. This will require some reading into the history of the hydrogen bomb as well as some hypothesis on how the hydrogen bomb's chemical makeup can affect the things around it. This project would be best suited for a report or essay.
