When to Prune Dwarf Pampas Grass
Ornamental grasses are increasing in popularity as easy-to-grow plants with unmatched texture and movement. Pampas grass is a showy landscape grass that can grow up to 10 feet high. It is so large that it doesn't fit into many garden plans unless the focal point is the grass. In an effort to provide variety, growers have produced a dwarf specimen Pampas. It is only about 3 feet tall and its dry winter foliage benefits from a rejuvenating pruning in spring. Does this Spark an idea?

Timing
-
Pampas grass is a drought- and salt-tolerant plant that does well in a variety of soils. Its versatility makes it an ideal plant for the home garden. The foliage of the dwarf pampas will turn brown as it ages but new green growth will come in spring. The grass can be pruned at any time but it is best to wait until spring. That way you can enjoy the rustle of the dry grass over the winter and have a vertical presence in a dormant garden. Prune in late winter to early spring just before new blades are emerging. The new growth will then be able to emerge evenly from the crown and not just from the center.
Method
-
Ornamental grasses don't really need to be pruned but the process makes way for the new foliage and ensures that the presentation is attractive. Dwarf pampas should be trimmed back to 3 or 4 inches from the ground. The foliage should not be pruned all the way to the grown as it can cut into the crown where growth takes place. You can make quick work of the job with electric shears or even a chain saw.

Cautions
-
Coraderia selloana is the species name for pampas grass. It is characterized by a wide flat blade of grass with slightly serrated edges. You cannot see the serration with your eyes very well but you can feel it. The grass cuts like a knife and utmost caution should be taken when working with it. Long pants and sleeves, eye protection and especially gloves are necessities when pruning dwarf pampas grasses. You will also need a very sharp blade as the grass is quite thick and can be difficult to cut through.
Uses
-
Dwarf pampas grass can be used in xeriscaping and dry soils. It looks stunning when planted en masse and can make a low border or hedge. The showy plumes provide interesting counterpoint in a perennial flower bed. Dwarf pampas grass has a wide network of roots and is useful in erosion-prone areas to control run-off and maintain soil. The inflorescence produced is an unusual addition to cut flower arrangements. It needs to be harvested when it first blooms and can be sprayed with hairspray to preserve it for quite some time.
