Kindergarten Roundup Ideas & Activities

Kindergarten Roundup Ideas & Activities thumbnail
Kindergarten Roundup is the beginning of the academic experience.

Kindergarten Roundup is usually one of the first opportunities parents and students have to learn about their child's school. It also gives teachers, parents and students the chance to meet for the first time, discuss future curriculum, and discuss steps parents can take to prepare a child for kindergarten. Schools usually hold Kindergarten Roundups the spring before a child is scheduled to start school. Some schools require a birth certificate, proof of residence and immunization records, so remember to bring these items.

  1. Learning Preparedness Workshop

    • Hold a workshop introducing steps that parents can take to prepare their child for the academic and social demands that he or she will have to face. Designate each kindergarten teacher to lead a station that discusses a particular aspect of the learning experience at the school such as reading, writing, math or social skills. Divide the parents and children into as many groups as there are stations, and welcome the parents to attend each station. This may offer a more informal atmosphere and hold the attention of the students and parents longer because they will have the chance to move around as well as receive better attention because of the size of the groups.

    "Simon Says"

    • Play "Simon Says" with the children. The game "Simon Says" is a game that blends fun with important learning skills. It helps test a child's ability to listen and follow directions. Offer prizes that encourage further learning such as a book or instructional tape to the students that win the game.

    School Tour

    • Take the parents and students on a tour of the school to show them recent work by other students. This is a good way to show parents firsthand what types of activities their child will be doing in school. Be sure to show things like science projects, student art and compositions by the students. This will also allow the parents and future students to familiarize themselves with the school's layout.

Pick up & Drop off Simulation

    • Simulate the experience parents and students will have when arriving to and departing from school. When they arrive for the Kindergarten Roundup, use signs to direct them to the proper classroom of the teacher that will be teaching them. This will help the students familiarize themselves with the route to their classroom. Also, inform the parents and students of any protocol or procedures that they will have to follow when arriving and departing.
