Hearts are common Valentine's Day decorations.

Valentine's Day is a great day to tell someone special that they are loved. Kids often do this best with crafts they made especially for their loved ones. Homemade children's crafts for Valentine's Day can be done in the classroom or at home and will keep your little ones busy and entertained.

  1. Paper Heart Garland

    • Decorate your home for Valentine's Day with paper heart garlands that your kids can cut, color and decorate. Start by cutting out a heart template. For best results use a cookie cutter and trace around the edges. Next, fold your red or white paper several times like a fan. Place your heart template with one of the heart sides against the fold. Trace and then cut. When you open up your paper you will have several hearts strung together. Have kids paint, color and decorate the string of hearts.

    Candy Necklace

    • For a great way to show how sweet you child is, help her make candy necklaces and bracelets. Gather some plastic wrap and cut a strip about 36 inches long for the necklace. Cut this in half for the bracelet. Lay unwrapped candy in a straight line on the plastic wrap. Roll the plastic wrap around the candies like a tube. Take some small strips of ribbon and tie a bow in between each piece of candy. To secure the necklace, twist the ends of the plastic wrap together.

    Finger Puppets

    • You child will enjoy making up stories with these Valentine's Day finger puppets. Use a cookie cutter to trace the design of a heart onto a heavy piece of card stock. Cut the heart out. Have children color the heart and add googly eyes, a nose and a mouth. They could even add yarn for the hair. Use a hole punch to cut out two holes where their fingers will go. Enlarge the holes with scissors to fit your child's fingers.

    Rock Painting

    • Gather smooth rocks from your front or backyard. You can also consider purchasing rocks from the store. Try to find rocks that are big enough to paint on but not too heavy to use as magnets. Use red and white paint to draw hearts on the rocks. For younger kids this might be too difficult, so just allow them to paint how they wish. Use a marker to write cute Valentine's phrases on the rocks, much like candy hearts. Examples of this are "I love you" or "Be mine." Glue a magnet to the back of the rock and hang it on the refrigerator.
