Business License for Restaurants in Salt Lake City

If cooking food comes naturally to you, opening a restaurant in Salt Lake City is a way to launch your culinary career. In this Utah capital, you will need to secure a number of business licenses before you can open your restaurant. These include a general business license from the state, a city license and a food service establishment permit.

  1. General Business Registration

    • All businesses in Utah are required by law to register with the Utah Department of Commerce. You can register online at Utah's OneStop Business Registration (see References). Information you will need includes the proposed name of your business, the business entity type, the location, the date you plan to open and the names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and tax IDs of all owners. There is also a filing fee.

    Food Permit License Preparation

    • Salt Lake City requires a number of documents and tax numbers to be secured prior to any submission for a food permit application. These include a sales and use tax license from the Utah State Tax Commission, a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), an Employee Income Tax Withholding Number from the Utah State Tax Commission, an Unemployment Insurance Employer Identification Number from the Department of Workforce Services, registration with Utah Department of Environmental Quality and a municipal business license. Check the website for Salt Lake City's Public Works for more-detailed information on each.

    Municipal Business License

    • You will need to apply for a municipal business license in the municipality in which your restaurant will be located. If you intend to have several locations, you will need a license for each one. The Salt Lake City Public Work's Department provides a map of all municipalities if you need to determine the municipality in which your restaurant will be located.

    Food Service License

    • You can apply for a food service license through the Salt Lake Valley Health Department. The application is available on its website. To receive a final license, you will need to undergo an inspection of your facility, which includes passing all regulations for food safety and handling. A self inspection form is available on the department's website as well. It includes rules on cooking temperatures, personal hygiene, hand sinks, refrigerated storage and dish washing.
