Bearded collies are friendly and energetic.

Parents need to consider which medium-sized dog is best for their children before purchasing a family dog. Bringing a dog into a home is a big commitment, emotionally and financially, and can be hard work if a parent selects the wrong breed. Although the selection can vary by personal circumstances and preferences, even-tempered, sociable breeds that aren't prone to showing aggression are the best options for families with children.

  1. Labrador Retriever

    • Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in America. They are eager to please, bright and often used as working dogs for the blind. They crave human companionship, have a balanced temperament and like to feel as though they are part of a family unit. They mix well with other dogs and are a good choice for families with children.

    Cocker Spaniel

    • The cocker spaniel is relatively easy to train, of average intelligence and is keen to learn and obey commands. The breed integrates well with other animals of a similar size as well as children but can have a tendency towards shyness if not socialized well in their formative years. They have a strong hunting instinct, and need control if they are near smaller animals or birds.

    Bearded Collie

    • The bearded collie is traditionally popular as a working dog. Also known as the Highland collie, people in Scotland used the bearded collie to herd animals. The breed has a cheerful disposition, is playful and energetic and makes a great pet for kids. As they require plenty of exercise, they are not a sensible choice for families that plan to leave their dog unattended at home for extended periods.

    Beagle

    • The beagle is a mild-tempered, intelligent and well-behaved breed of dog. As they are energetic, they need a fair amount of mental and physical stimulation. They have a reputation of being excellent around children and are generally good with other dogs. They do however have well-developed hunting instincts, which means they are prone to go for smaller animals and birds if given the chance.
