Birthday parties don't have to come at a high price.

Birthday parties don't need to be costly affairs. Throwing a party is a unique way to show off your ingenuity and individuality. Don't be discouraged if money is an issue; there are lots of options for showing guests a good time and providing a memorable event on a limited budget. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. At Home

    • Transform your living space into party central by decking it out with inexpensive decorations like balloons, streamers, colored light bulbs and other decorative items found in the home. Fill bowls with tasty snacks and homemade punch for guests to enjoy as they mingle and chat. Create a playlist of your favorite music, and allow people to take turns as DJ or make requests. Make your own cake rather than buying one from a bakery. Since the venue came free of charge, more of your budget is freed up for decorations and party favors.

    Local Park

    • Many neighborhood parks have tented areas featuring benches and barbecue areas designed especially for parties and social events. Ask your local parks and recreation department if you'll need to book space for your gathering; you'll likely be able to do so for free, as long as the park is open to the public and you abide by fire regulations. Send email invitations asking attendees to bring food and drinks to share, and plan a scavenger hunt or other outdoor activities that get people moving and interacting. Make sure you have a backup plan in case of bad weather.

    Skating

    • Roller and ice skating rinks offer party packages and standardized rental fees for birthday parties. Shop around for the best deal, and inquire about discounts. Packages typically include admission for a set number of guests, skate rental for all, pizza and soda and supplies for cutting and serving birthday cake. Decide whether you'd like to purchase a party package or, if money is really tight, ask guests to pay their own admission fees for a more casual gathering.

    Church or Community Center

    • To save yourself a mess at home, ask your church or local community center if they have an available room. Many religious and civic groups have free or inexpensive spaces in which you can build a party scene from the ground up, doing your own decorating and providing your own food and entertainment. Plan a themed dance party or a formal dinner consisting of dishes prepared by guests or fellow party planners to save money. This type of venue makes for a good surprise party location, as all planning and setup can take place beforehand.
