Learning Objectives for Sixth Grade Math Students
Math is an integral part of learning for all students. It prepares grade six students to use numeric skills for the rest of their lives. The foundations of math skills are laid during elementary and middle school. As such, meeting all of the learning objectives during the course of the year is necessary for continued success in math. The objectives are set out by states as well as by individual school districts.

Rational Numbers
-
The understanding of rational numbers, which include any integer or the fraction of two integers, grows during grade six. Equations with basic negative numbers, calculating percentages, and the order of equations is integral to the learning curriculum of grade six. Students also explore very large and small numbers.
Algebra
-
Algebra expands a student's math knowledge in grade six. Students use simple algebraic expressions to determine properties of rational numbers. Students also use expressions to solve simple equations or inequalities.
-
Graphing Skills and Functions
-
Grade six students must be able to graph and measure two- and three-dimensional figures. Perimeters, areas, mass of square and triangular objects, as well as circumference, mass, and size of circles and orbs are also covered. Students use functions to determine planes and the transformation of objects across the plane.
Predictions
-
Probabilities are a large part of the grade six math curriculum. Predicting answers in counting strategies and likelihood of events are taught throughout the grade. Students learn theories of probability as well as concrete numerical predictions. Students must demonstrate the ability to analyze the results and report them appropriately.
