Sixth Grade Physical Eduction Activities
Physical education classes are a time for pupils to exercise, develop skills and learn about sportsmanship. Make gym classes a hit with your sixth-grade pupils by planning a variety of enjoyable activities. Incorporate team and individual games into your classes that promote fitness and fun.

Benchball

Place a bench at each end of the gym. Divide the class into two teams and have them stand in each half of the gym. Select one pupil from each team to be the goalie. Each goalie stands on the bench opposite their team. Players must try to throw a soccer ball to their goalie. If the goalie catches the ball, the thrower joins him on the bench. Players can pass the ball on offense and try to block throws to the goalie on defense. The game ends when one team has all its players on the bench. Add more balls to the game to make it more interesting.
Scooter Basketball

Add a twist to the traditional game of basketball. Place a toddler-sized basketball net at each end of the gym. Alternatively, a hamper or basket can be used. Use a soft ball small enough to fit in the nets. Divide the class into two teams and have one team wear colored mesh vests. Give each pupil a scooter board. Have pupils play a game of basketball, riding their scooter boards and shooting at the small nets. Have pupils rotate onto the court if playing with a large class.

Triangle Tag

Divide the class into groups of four. Instruct three pupils in each group to hold hands, forming a circle. The fourth pupil stands outside the circle and is the "chaser." Choose one person in the circle to be the target. The chaser must try to tag this person. Give a signal to start the game. The circle of pupils must work together to protect the target from the chaser. When the target is tagged, he becomes the chaser.
Ship Captain

Stand in the middle of the gym with your pupils. Tell them they will be pretending the gym is a boat. When you call out "Bow!" they must run to the front wall. "Stern" refers to the back wall. When you call out "Port!" they must run to the left side and when you call out "Starboard!" they must run to the right side. The last pupil to touch the correct wall is eliminated. Continue calling out directions until only one pupil is left. You can add other directions like "Scrub the deck" where pupils pretend to wash the floor. "Climb the mizzenmast" has them pretending to climb a ladder. Pupils lie down on their stomachs when you say "Hit the deck!"
