Children need to learn about fire prevention at an early age.

The National Fire Prevention Association estimates that in 2009 there was total of 1,348,500 fires, causing 3,010 deaths and injuring 17,050 people. Because of the dangers of fire it is very important to teach children about fire prevention from an early age. Crafts are a fantastic way to teach preschoolers how to prevent fires; they are a fun activity and also a good conversation starter to discuss fire prevention with their families.

  1. Egg Carton Fire Truck

    • All you need for this craft is an egg carton, red paint or markers, and black construction paper. Start by cutting the lid off the egg carton and instruct the children to paint it red. While the paint dries, have the children cut out two circles of black construction paper, they can trace them using a round shape before cutting. Once the paint is dry, glue the black circles on as wheels. The children can draw people on the fire truck or cut out images of people from a magazine and glue them on the truck. They can also draw or cut out a ladder to add to the truck.

    Eatable Fire Truck

    • For an eatable craft have preschoolers create a fire truck with a graham cracker. Instruct the children to spread red frosting on the graham cracker, place a cheese cracker in front of the truck and build a latter with pretzel sticks. Then have them place two round cookies as wheels and add chocolate candies as hub caps, these can be glued with frosting. Finally, the children can add peanuts as head and tail lights, and red pieces of candy on the top of the fire truck as lights.

    Origami Sparky Puppet

    • Sparky is a National Fire Prevention Association's Dalmatian who helps kids learn about fire prevention. To create an origami Sparky, instruct children to fold a white piece of construction paper diagonally to form a triangle. Then, with the center of the triangle facing them, help them fold the two other points of the triangle to create the ears. Instruct the children to draw Sparky's face and spots on his ears. Glue an ice cream stick on the back of the dog to create a puppet.

    Fire Dog Cup Puppet

    • To create a fire dog puppet with a Styrofoam cup, instruct preschoolers to glue wiggly eyes and a small black pompom for the nose onto the cup. Then with a black marker help them draw the mouth. Cut ears out of white construction paper and let the children color black dots on the ears before they glue them to the cup. For the firefighter hat, cut a circle of red construction paper, cut a U on the middle to create a flap, and then attach it to the top of the head. Finally instruct preschoolers to decorate the firefighter hat.
