Personal Gifts That Are Homemade for Moms

A picnic you put together yourself makes for a personal gift for Mom.

Moms deserve the very best of your efforts. Sometimes this means buying a special present you know she will enjoy, while sometimes, the best gifts are those you design and create yourself. Homemade gifts exude a personal touch and create a special memory of the occasion.

  1. Bake and Decorate

    • Bake a special cookie for your mom. Write her name, the occasion and greeting in frosting, or bake a cake and decorate it in the same way. If your mother loves chocolate, bake her a pan of brownies that you frost with your message.

    Positive List

    • Consider your mom's positive attributes, that you love about her. Compile them into a list and top it with the heading, "Ten Things I Love About You," or "Fifty Things..." whatever the number on your list. Instead of a list, write a poem about those things you appreciate about your mom, or write up one very special memory. Try to keep your expression to one page. Print it on textured paper with a background design, frame it by decorating around the edges or laminate or place it into a picture frame.

    Just Mom and Me

    • Plan a picnic for just you and your mom. If the weather is warm, take the picnic outside to a park or the backyard. If the weather does not cooperate, open a blanket on the floor of your living room and serve your meal picnic style. The food can be simple, such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that young children can put together, or more elaborate meals of chicken and potato salad. The key is to plan a feast and a special time for you and your mom to connect. If a picnic is not her "thing," make it a special meal served at the table.

    Pencil Holder

    • Strip the paper label off of a can. Using a combination of your mom's favorite colors, tape or glue the end of a piece of yarn to the bottom of one side of the can. Wrap the yarn around the can from bottom to top. You can use two colors at a time, or start with one, add another and finish with the first or a third. Glue the ends to the can. Add a small bow that complements the colors. Add your mother's favorite pens, pencils or paintbrushes to the homemade holder. Instead of yarn, wrap the can with ribbon, string, thin rope or even shoelaces.

    Coupons

    • Moms do not always need fancy gifts --- often what they need is a helping hand. Create a series of coupons for chores you can do around the house, whether this is taking out the trash, vacuuming or even cleaning your room. You might make several of each chore. When your mother feels stressed, she can hand you one of the coupons and you agree to do the chore without complaint or putting it off. Or, rather than different coupons, make one coupon for a larger project to either do yourself or that you commit to helping your mother complete, such as painting the living room or weeding the garden.
