Instructions on Doing Balloon Arches for Weddings

Balloon arches frequently accentuate the entrance to an indoor or outdoor wedding area. A common way to construct a balloon arch is to fill balloons with helium and attach them to a lightweight thread which is weighted on both ends. Time is of the essence when making a balloon arch, as helium balloons begin to lose their buoyancy after around 10 hours. This should be one of the last wedding decorations you put in place.

  1. Measuring The Arch

    • Measure the width of the arch, on the ground and in a straight line, from where one side of the arch will be to where the other will be. Next, measure the height of the arch from the ground to where its highest point in the center will be.

If the measurements are wider than they are tall, add the width and height measurements for the total arch length. If the width and height are the same, add the width plus the height times 1.5. If the width is smaller than the height, add the width plus the height times 2.

With common 11-inch latex balloons, you will need six balloons for every foot of the arch.

    Starting The Arch

    • Cut a length of clear nylon thread that this 3 feet longer than the arch measurement you came up with. This extra length of thread is for securing the ends of the thread to weights, such as bricks. After tying one end of the thread to a weight, inflate your first two balloons with helium and tie them together. Inflate two more balloons, and after tying them together as well, twist the ends of both sets of balloons around each other. Attach these first four balloons to the thread about 9 inches away from the weight by twisting them onto the nylon thread.

    Attaching The Balloons

    • Inflate, tie and attach the next four balloons as you did before, this time attaching the set of four interconnected balloons to the nylon thread roughly 12 inches from the first set. Repeat this process along the nylon thread with each subsequent set of balloons. Alternate the colors of each balloon cluster to keep the arch interesting.

    Finishing The Arch

    • Secure the last set of four balloons to the nylon thread, roughly 9 inches from the other end of the thread. Attach this end to a weight, and gently move the balloon arch to its desired location. For extra flair, tie alternating colored streamers to the nylon thread, between the places where the balloon clusters are attached. Space these streamers uniformly along the thread and let them hang down.
