Safety engineering ensures that individuals are safe in a working environment.

Safety engineering focuses on the safety and protection of individuals in a work environment. Opportunities are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and courses focus on the various possible dangers workers may face, including fire, toxic waste and nuclear material. Students learn a variety of management and leadership techniques to implement new safety principles and procedures in the workplace.

  1. University of Alabama-Birmingham

    • The University of Alabama-Birmingham's master of engineering offers a track in advanced safety engineering and management. The program is available entirely online, and students must complete 33 credits. Courses in the program include introduction to system safety, waste elimination, engineering risk, human performance and engineering design, calculated risk taking and crisis leadership. Students in the program must have a computer with high-speed Internet connection, and communication takes place through e-mail, discussion boards and chat rooms.

Missouri University of Science and Technology

    • Missouri University of Science and Technology offers a graduate certificate in safety engineering. Specializations in the program are available in human factors, nuclear process safety, safety engineering management and chemical/metallurgical process safety. All specializations require that students take courses in risk assessment and reduction as well as safety engineering management. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or physical science. Other course options include radiological engineering, function-based risk analysis and human computer interaction.

    Eastern Kentucky University

    • Eastern Kentucky University offers a bachelor's degree in fire protection and safety engineering. Students in the program learn about industrial loss prevention, safety program management, occupational safety and health practices and fire protection principles. Additional focuses within the program involve the improvement of protection gear, construction of safer buildings, implementation of safety practices and development of safety procedures. Opportunities are available to learn from various professionals, including engineers, architects and firefighters, to make buildings and workers safer.

    Texas A&M University

    • Texas A&M University offers a master of science in safety engineering that requires students to complete 32 credits along with a thesis. Twenty-four of the credits are in required courses, while the final eight are elective courses. The curriculum covers topics in process safety engineering, industrial hygiene, fire protection engineering, biological control system analysis, occupational biomechanics and quantitative risk analysis. Students also must participate in a seminar and a research project relating to safety engineering.
