What Are Free Crafts Using Fabric for Preschool Children?
Preschool age children love to engage in arts and crafts but, because of their age, their ability to participate in art projects is limited. While a preschooler may not be able to assemble a model or execute a complicated sewing project, she can use fabric, markers and glue to create a variety of fun craft projects. There are endless possibilities for craft projects using only scrap fabric and miscellaneous items from around the house that will keep your preschooler entertained.

Bean Bag Sock Buddy
-
With just a few materials from around the house you can make a bean bag buddy from an old sock. Fill a colored sock with dried beans or split peas and tie off the opening with ribbon or yarn. Have your children glue on a pair of big googly eyes and a piece of red yarn for a mouth. Help your children add accessories like yarn hair or a small hat to finish off your bean bag sock buddy.
Beautiful Butterflies
-
Get rid of some of the scrap fabric you have lying around the house by letting your preschooler use it to create a beautiful butterfly. Cut out a butterfly shape from a sheet of card stock or a piece of cardboard and let your child glue on pieces of colorful fabric in whatever pattern she chooses. Add pipe cleaner antennae and hang the butterfly up for display on the door to your child's room.

Stuffed Monster Pals
-
Have your child draw a picture of a monster or some kind of imaginary creature, then help her bring her drawing to life with fabric and glue. Trace the outline of your child's monster onto a piece of folded over fabric, cut the two pieces out and then sew together the front and back using a sewing machine, or by hand with needle and thread. Leave a small opening at the bottom. Give your child the freedom to decorate the monster with scraps of fabric, buttons, ribbon and markers, then stuff it with polyester fiberfill and sew the opening shut.
No Mess Tie-Dye
-
Children love to tie-dye, but sometimes it is just not worth the mess. Try out an alternative method of tie-dye with your preschooler using Sharpie markers. Take a plain white T-shirt and bunch it up into sections with rubber bands, then allow your child to color in the different sections with a Sharpie marker. Take your child's colored T-shirt outside or into a well-ventilated area and spray it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. This will cause the ink to run and bleed, creating a tie-dye effect. Allow the ink to dry completely before removing the rubber bands, then wash the shirt in cold water to set the ink. Try this method with scrap fabric and use the dyed fabric to make other crafts.
Fabric Collage
-
This craft is a great way to use up scrap fabric while also creating a beautiful piece of artwork. Help your child to cut up scrap fabric into small pieces and divide the pieces into piles of light, medium and dark colors. Draw or print a picture of an animal or some kind of simple shape like a fish, a house or an outdoor scene. Then, glue down the pieces of fabric to fill in the picture. Allow the picture to dry completely, then hang it up for display on the refrigerator or on the wall in your child's room.
