Alcohol can cause many serious problems in a relationship.

Alcohol can have many negative effects on an otherwise healthy relationship. Sometimes when people abuse alcohol, they don't realize all the damage they are doing to their family or other people.

  1. Finances

    • One of the major ways that alcohol can affect a relationship is financially. Alcohol is an expensive item to buy, and social activities associated with drinking are also very expensive. If someone is abusing alcohol, this habit adds up financially and is going to cause strain on one's wallet. When someone spends all their money on alcohol, it causes unnecessary tension, especially if the couple is sharing a bank account.

    Conflict

    • Alcohol use changes the way a person behaves, and it can change their personality as well. It lowers inhibitions, which makes a person more likely to act differently than they normally would, causing conflicts. Conflict caused by alcohol can often lead to larger problems, such as abuse, violence or infidelity.

    Deception

    • One of the key factors in any relationship is trust. Often, when a drinking problem is present, lying and deception follow since alcohol abusers try to hide their problem from others. It is very common for them to deny the existence of any alcohol problems, and when they start to lie to their significant others, they are betraying their trust. Since trust is the foundation for most relationships, this can lead to major problems.

    Communication Problems

    • When alcohol abusers are consistently intoxicated, it leads to major communication problems between them and their loved ones. Communication is vital in any relationship, and the impact is great when communication goals are not met within a couple. Alcohol abusers may not be able to communicate or react with common sense as they normally would, thereby destroying the lines of communication.
