There are lots of fun ways for kids to get involved on Earth Day.

Earth Day, celebrated on April 22 of each year, is a holiday for taking extra time to enjoy the earth and engaging in ways to protect the planet and its resources. It's an opportunity for adults and children to discuss conservation and respect for the planet. There are numerous fun and educational activities for kids on Earth Day that can help foster their appreciation for the earth. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Make a Reusable Bag

    • Paper and plastic bags may be convenient at the grocery store, but they are a drain on natural resources, and many of them end up in landfills or on the street once they're discarded. Making reusable bags can be a fun way for kids to learn about protecting the environment. Have your kids help you find heavy fabric to sew into rectangular bags with handles. Or buy some canvas bags at a craft store and draw colorful designs on them using fabric pens.

    Make a Video

    • Kids may have many thoughts and feelings about environmental issues that they learn about at school and home. One fun way for them to channel their feelings on these issues could be to make a video about a particular environmental problem or issue. The Environmental Protection Agency even holds a yearly video contest for kids. They can choose from a myriad of topics and learn the basics of video editing.

    Draw or Paint

    • Many children love to paint and color, so a fun way for them to get involved with Earth Day is to do just that. Have the kids pick one of their favorite animals, or a park, or anything that has to do with the environment. Then grab some white construction paper and kid-safe paint or markers and let the children draw their picture. They can even explain why it is so important to protect the subject of their artwork.

    Enjoy the Earth Around You

    • One of the simplest activities for children on Earth Day is to just enjoy it. Take the kids on a walk or nature hike. Point out different plants and animals you see and discuss the importance of taking care of the environment during your walk. Encourage them to take photographs or to draw pictures of what they see while out and about. Kids can learn to appreciate the beauty of the earth when they spend time exploring it.
