There are many advantages to drug testing in schools.

Drug testing in schools throughout the United States continues to be a controversial issue between students, families, educators and law enforcement. There are several advantages to conducting drug tests for all involved.

Reduces Incidence of Drug Use

The possibility of being drug tested in school acts as a deterrent for students who would normally use or consider using drugs. Drug tests would identify and confirm if a student is using illegal substances. The fear of being found guilty of breaking the law is often enough to deflect students from using drugs.

Raises Grade Point Averages

Because drug testing acts as a deterrent for drug use, the grade point average of students who would normally use drugs would rise. The percentage of students using drugs would decrease among schools, raising the overall performance of school-age persons.

Identifies Substance Abuse Problems

Drug testing in schools would help to identify issues of substance abuse among students that would otherwise not be recognized. Drug testing would be the initial step necessary in the recognition and rehabilitation of such students.
