Uses
-
In the home, decorative window film is often used for privacy, and it is ideal for this application. Bathroom windows, glass doors and sidelights next to entry doors are common places where window film can provide privacy while still letting in light. Some types of film can also block UV rays, reduce indoor temperatures, stop computer glare and offer additional safety if a window breaks by holding the shards together. Decorative window film can also block an undesirable view, like the side of a neighbor's house or a parking lot, or add a decorative element to an ordinary window.
Advantages
-
Decorative window film is less expensive than frosted, etched or stained glass. It also offers protection from ultraviolet rays that standard glass cannot, potentially reducing energy use and protecting floors and fabrics from fading. Because it is easily removed and replaced, window film can be quickly updated to match new decor. It also can be easily applied. Large or oddly shaped windows do not present a problem, as it can be cut to fit the shape of the opening.

Disadvantages
-
Decorative window films must be applied with care and under certain temperature conditions, and cuts must be exact. Low-quality films may bubble, yellow, fade or crack over time. Solar-blocking decorative window film may block out beneficial winter sunlight. Window film also does not offer the option of opening the window up completely to light, like blinds or curtains.
Considerations
-
The amount of privacy and the local climate are important considerations when you choose decorative window film. Clear textured films offer low levels of privacy and maximum amounts of light, while solid-colored films offer plenty of privacy but also let in less light. In warmer climates, a film that also reduces heat may be ideal, but in cooler climates it may increase energy costs. Film quality can vary greatly between manufacturers, so research is important.
