Employment Programs for Felons

Employment Programs for Felons thumbnail
Most states have employment programs for felons.

Getting a job in a bad economy is tough enough without a criminal record. For former felons, the odds are exponentially greater. The unemployment rate for formerly incarcerated prisoners in the state of New York hovers near 60 percent, according to a 2006 study from the Independent Committee on Reentry and Employment titled "Report and Recommendations to New York State on Enhancing Employment Opportunities for Formerly Incarcerated People." However, employment programs help job seekers with a criminal record.

  1. Salvation Army Prisoner Rehabilitation Program

    • The Salvation Army Prisoner Rehabilitation Program has cooperative arrangements with prison, probation, and parole officials through the country. Services include pre-release job training programs, employment opportunities in cooperation with parole personnel and material aid. The program also offers designated halfway houses where former prisoners can participate in work-release programs.

    America Works

    • America Works offers a personalized employment service for hard-to-place workers, including former criminals. It offers programs in New York, Maryland, Washington D.C. and California. The program helps former felons find entry-level positions such as word processor, mail room clerk, customer service representative, cashier, security guard, and warehouse worker. The program also offers educational opportunities including GED courses, ESL instruction, college credits and vocational training.

    Chrysalis

    • Chrysalis is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that hires ex-felons directly in addition to providing resources and support for job seekers. Its employment programs include Chrysalis Staffing, a full-service staffing agency, Chrysalis Works, a professional street-maintenance and cleaning service and Chrysalis Recycling. It also offers classes and instruction in job search strategy, anger management, resume writing, interview preparation, basic computer training and job retention skills.

    H.I.R.E. Network

    • The H.I.R.E. Network is a clearinghouse of employment programs in all 50 states. It details programs from local service providers as well as information for employers who are considering hiring felons. The network also works as an advocate for ex-felons who are seeking fair employment opportunities.
