Wedding & Prom Formal Hairstyles
A variety of hairstyles can be appropriate for formal events like your wedding or prom, whether you have long hair worn up or even a short pixie hairstyle. What determines the formality and elegance of the hairdo will be the care and precision with which the hairstyle is created and how well the style complements the bride or prom-goer's attire. Does this Spark an idea?

Updo
-
For formal wedding hairstyles that are worn completely up, consider French twists, low buns and masses of curls that have been gathered and pinned into place. These more classic styles help keep a formal updo both simple and elegant. If you want to create a less traditional look, try taking one of these common styles and placing the twist, bun or bundle of curls off to one side. Asymmetry will add interest, without overcomplicating a hairstyle. Updos that go for a funky look may otherwise seem adolescent and outdated if not executed well.
Half Up
-
If you want to wear your hair down but know that hair around the face will get in your way, put your hair half-up. Simply pin the crown section of hair back with a few bobby pins or even into a small bun. A half-up hairstyle that is too ornate will often distract from the beautiful hair cascading beneath, so think simple. Wearing your hair half-up will keep your style tame, allowing your flawless makeup and beautiful gown to shine for your big event.

Down
-
Hair worn completely down for a wedding or prom can add a youthful and carefree touch to your overall look. Before choosing to wear your hair down, however, keep in mind that your hairstyle needs to stay intact for about eight hours. If you and your stylist are not confident that your hairstyle will last that long, choose a different style. When wearing your hair down, use plenty of teasing and hairspray to get the most longevity from the style. For loose curls, use a 1- or 2-inch-barrel curling iron or hot rollers.
Accessories
-
Use accessories to spice up your formal hairstyle. For someone who has very short hair, an aptly placed flower, sparkly clip, unique headband or ribbons can be the addition that changes an everyday hairdo into an extraordinary one. If you have at least shoulder-length hair but have always dreamed of having long tresses at your wedding, consider clip-on hair extensions to create the desired look. Also, brides who are wearing a veil will need to plan their bridal hairstyle around it.
