When to Plant Rose Trees

When to Plant Rose Trees thumbnail
Roses make a lovely edition to any landscape.

Long considered a symbol of love, beauty, and even war, roses are favored for their vibrant colors, luxuriant scents, and winter hardiness. Successful cultivation of rose trees begins by planting each tree at the right time of year and by following a few basic steps during the planting and growing process. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bare-root Roses

    • Bare-root roses can be identified by their austere initial appearance. The bare-root rose tree arrives from the nursery as little more than a brown root and dormant stem. Its bare-bones appearance makes the bare-root rose tree a more cost-effective option than container roses, which will have been planted and cultivated inside a pot by the nursery. Bare-root roses are best planted in the late winter.

    Container Roses

    • Container roses are already potted. A container rose may have some leaf growth and perhaps even a few blooms. Having been cultivated to some extent, a container rose tree will be a more costly option than a bare rose tree. Container rose trees are best planted in the early spring.

    Bare-root Rose Planting

    • Plant the roots of a bare-root rose in 18 inches of compost-enriched soil in a spot that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Tamp down the soil around the roots to eliminate pockets of air. Add water to the soil to allow the bare-root rose tree to settle, and cut the tree's canes to a length of 8 inches. Construct a further mound of soil, measuring 6 inches high, around the plant to prevent the canes from drying out. Once buds begin to sprout, remove this mound of soil.

    Container Rose Planting

    • Remove the container rose carefully from its pot, and loosen the soil around the root ball to expose the roots. Plant these roots in a hole the depth of the original pot and approximately 18 inches in diameter. Refill the hole with compost-enriched soil. Pat the soil to eliminate air from the soil mixture. Add water to the soil and place compost atop the soil to help the soil retain moisture.
