Back-to-School Ideas for Elementary Bulletin Boards

One of the first things your students may see when they return after summer break is the hallway bulletin boards. Here you can greet children with a warm, welcoming message that also makes them excited to be back at school. Bulletin boards don't have to take a long time to assemble; it's the creativity behind them that counts.

  1. Frogs

    • Make the theme of your bulletin board "Take a Leap Into ____ Grade." To create this board, cover the background with blue construction paper so that it looks like water. Cut out frogs from green construction paper and write a child's name on each frog. Cut out the letters from a bright-colored paper. Add pink lily pads and flowers, if desired, for added decoration.

    Monkeys

    • Use the theme "Swing Into ____ Grade" to create a bulletin board. Use blue paper for the sky and green paper for grass along the bottom. Cut a tree out of dark brown paper and use real leaves or cut green leaves out of paper for the tree. Use tan construction paper to cut out monkeys to hang from the tree. Write one child's name on each monkey. Use a bright, inviting color to cut out the letters for the title.

    Students

    • Create your welcome back bulletin board with the help of your students. Prep the board by covering the background with a bright-colored paper. Cut out people from paper and ask students to decorate the person as themselves and write something about themselves that makes them special.

    Summer Memories

    • Send a welcome letter to your students asking them to prepare a small picture depicting a memory of their summer for the first day of class. Staple colored paper on the back of the board and cut out "Summer Memories" as a title. Staple the pictures to the board on the first day of school after discussing their favorite summer memories as a class.
