Earth Day Community Projects

When Earth Day was first established in 1970, more than 20 million U.S. citizens became involved in the movement. Since 1970, the concept has expanded to almost 200 countries. You can become part of the Earth Day effort by being active in your own community. There are several Earth Day projects available across the United States.

  1. Shopping Bags

    • The Earth Day Network initiated a campaign called "A Billion Acts of Green!" People from all over the world have the option to pledge an act that is good for the environment. Your community can get involved too. A simple act such as refusing to use the plastic shopping bags at your local grocery can have a positive effect on the environment. Bring your own bags with you to the supermarket.

    Pledge Board

    • To get everyone in your community involved in Earth Day, make the Earth Day pledge more flexible. Not everyone has to pledge the same green act. Instead, put up an Earth Day Pledge Board at your local community center. Members of your community can pledge their own green acts, whether it's eating only local produce or walking instead of driving to local events. Allowing people in the community to choose may feel better than requiring everyone in the community to perform the same green act.

    Public Transportation

    • Nothing is as inspiring as a community that bands together for a worthy cause. This is a green act that can take place on Earth Day or any day of the year -- for one day, an entire community can agree to use public transportation instead of their cars. It's a relatively easy act, since it only requires a single day of effort (or more, if the community should choose), and the environmental inspiration it provides may spur other environmentally friendly activities from individual members of the community.

    Electrical Energy Consumption

    • A little bit from a lot of people adds up. If each person in a community uses slightly less electricity, the collective carbon footprint is that much smaller. Your community can choose a month in spring for optimal weather conditions, and agree to reduce your use of clothes dryers. Spring is the perfect time of the year -- it's not cold enough to require heating, it's not warm enough to require air conditioning and your clothing will dry quickly outside.
