School uniforms have a reputation for being old-fashioned and out of style.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that in the 2007-2008 school year, 18 percent of public schools enforced a school uniform policy. School uniforms have long been a subject of debate. As incidences of school violence and bullying have increased, administrators have given more consideration to bringing uniforms into their schools. While some believe uniforms can bring students together and level the playing field, others believe they are just a Band-Aid on larger issues.

  1. Increased School Safety

    • Safety is a high priority in schools. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that in 2009 nearly 20 percent of students were bullied at school while 11 percent were involved in a physical fight. Evidence has shown that school uniforms can decrease incidences of violence, according to a research brief created by the Principals' Partnership. National School Safety and Security Services also believes that uniforms can contribute to improved school safety by reducing conflict among students based on their socioeconomic backgrounds, removing gang-related clothing and helping staff identify visitors.

    Improved Academic Performance

    • A 2010 study conducted by the University of Houston found that school uniforms had improved academic performance and school attendance. The study revealed that girls in the school especially benefited from the uniforms. They missed one day less of school on average and were more likely to stay in school and not drop out or transfer. Uniforms can help students concentrate on their studies by reducing the distractions that clothing can cause. Students are not as worried about what they and their peers are wearing.

    Minimized Self Expression

    • A student's choice of attire is often an expression of her personality and a way to show creativity. When forced to conform, students can lose their individuality. According to the Public School Parent's Network, some experts believe that when students cannot choose their school wardrobe, they will find other outlets for expressing themselves inappropriately through their makeup or hair. Some even contend that school uniforms are a violation of a student's First Amendment right to freedom of expression.

    Financial Strain

    • School uniforms can lead some families to spend even more money on their kids' clothing. Parents have to pay for the uniform plus street clothes. Not all families can afford a second wardrobe. The Consortium to Prevent School Violence cautions that any school considering the implementation of school uniforms should first consider the financial needs of its students and their families. Schools should have a program in place that helps parents pay for uniforms.
