Ask your caterer a few questions and avoid surprises.

Planning a wedding can wreak havoc on the happy couple by causing stress and anxiety about money and vendor performance on the big day. The question of how guests will be fed and the menu can add unnecessary worry to an already stressful process. Make sure the caterer provides service that meets your needs by asking a few questions up front.

  1. Bar Cost

    • Catering companies may quote the standard cost of food and basic drinks of coffee and tea but not the bar cost. Obtain quotes for a basic beer-and-wine reception, what happens if the bar runs dry and if spirits will cost more. Verify that the catering company or wedding venue possesses a valid liquor license and liquor liability insurance if required in your state or jurisdiction.

    Linens and Additional Items

    • Some catering prices may not include linens or utensils. If they are not included, the couple will need to work with another vendor to obtain those linens and dishes. If a couple does need an outside vendor for linens and dishes, be sure to work out the details on how the catering staff will handle the utensils, plates, and linens. Ensuring that the couple is clear on the tipping procedure also makes the day smooth.

    Cake Service

    • Even if your cake was made by a non-affiliated bakery, the catering company may have rules regarding the cake distribution. Many companies do not allow any service of food by a non-catering staff person but require that the cake be cut by the happy couple and whisked to the kitchen for proper distribution. This eliminates the need for an aunt or niece to be stuck behind the cake table all night and eliminates any bickering on serving sizes.

    Other Dietary Options

    • The chosen menu may consist of chicken or beef, but many of your guests may be vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions. Ask the catering manager if a few plates of a vegetarian option or diabetic option can be available upon request. Remember that food recommendations are not always communicated to a couple until the day of the wedding. Make sure that the caterer can accommodate these dietary surprises and find out if there will be an extra cost.
