South Atlanta Colleges

South Atlanta has four colleges located within the neighborhood.

South Atlanta is a neighborhood in the city of Atlanta that is full of African-American history; it was originally known as Brownsville. South Atlanta has four colleges located within the neighborhood giving students the opportunity to study in an area full of history. Many of these colleges focus on African-American students.

Atlanta Metropolitan College

Atlanta Metropolitan College is a two-year unit of the University System of Georgia. The school is situated on a landscaped campus that is accessible to the MARTA which serves as Atlanta's public transportation system. The college has degree programs in over 40 areas of study including business administration, computer science, English, psychology and teacher education. Two major types of study are available: college transfer programs and career programs. Transfer programs are for students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university, while career programs are for students working to obtain an Associate's degree. Campus life at the school includes a variety of clubs ranging from the drama club to the student newspaper. Students can choose day, evening, weekend or online courses. As of 2011, over 3000 students are enrolled at Atlanta Metropolitan College.

Morris Brown College

Morris Brown College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college that focuses on teaching and public service with an emphasis on leadership, management, entrepreneurship and technology. The school is based on Christian principles. Morris Brown College is organized in two divisions: the lower division and the upper division. The lower division, the general education curriculum, is the core curriculum of the school and prepares students for all the background and information necessary for advanced study in the major they choose. The upper division is focused on the courses that relate and support the chosen major. Baccalaureate degrees are awarded to students in either a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration or a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management and Leadership. Majors and concentrations within the school include hospitality management, sports management, business law and religious administration. Online education is available to students. The school offers campus organizations such as the college marching band, campus ministries and a media and technology club. Morris Brown College also has college football and basketball teams.

Morehouse College

Morehouse College is the only historically male black institution of higher learning in the United States. The private institution offers Bachelor of Arts or Science degrees in a total of 26 majors including economics, history, mathematics and political science. The campus offers student housing, student organizations, Greek life and performing arts. Athletic programs are also available including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track and field. Morehouse College often collaborates with Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Interdenominational Theological Center and the Morehouse School of Medicine. Black Enterprise lists Morehouse College as the number one college in the nation for educating African-American males. The Wall Street Journal, as of 2010, also ranks Morehouse College as one of the top colleges in sending students to elite institutions of higher learning.

Spelman College

Spelman College is a historically black liberal arts college for women in south Atlanta; the 39-acre campus is only minutes from downtown. The school offers Bachelor of Arts and Science programs in art, child development, international studies, religious studies and comparative women's studies. Student housing is available on campus. Athletics at Spelman College include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. There is also a cheerleading team. Students can join sororities or be part of student government. Spelman College often works with Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
