Black History Month Games for Kids
February is Black History month, which celebrates groundbreaking crusaders and milestones in African American history. Teaching children about African American history during this month can be done using educational games that will let kids have fun while they learn. Depending on your teaching methods and the grade level of children you are teaching, there are a few different types of games you can employ.
-
Trivia Contest
-
Have a trivia contest for kids to compete in with questions pertaining to Black History month. Create game board similar to that of Jeopardy with note cards separated into different categories, such as Famous Women, Famous Men, Important Dates and Random Facts. Kids can separate into teams and compete for points by answering questions correctly.
Memory Game
-
Have a memory game where you flip over cards and try and find their matches with a Black History month theme. Instead of matching cards with similar pictures have cards that state a fact about a significant person in African American history and a corresponding card with a picture of that person. For example, make card that says "He gave his groundbreaking 'I have a dream' speech' at the Lincoln Memorial," for Martin Luther King Jr. and have another card with his photo.
-
Word Games
-
Create a crossword puzzle with words based on factual clues about African American history. Make a word search of scrambled letters with famous African American names and terms hidden for kids to find. Do a Wheel of Fortune-style game, but in order for kids to be able to guess letters they must answer a question right about a person, place or thing significant in African American history.
Costume Contest
-
Hold a costume contest for kids where they can come dressed as famous people in African American history. Kids can have help from parents making costumes and come in character. Have them research their characters and learn facts about the person they are dressing as to say in front of the class when they present their costumes. At the end you can have people vote on who they thought had the best costume or who played their role best.
