For couples who share a love of art, a fun date idea, located in the heart of downtown Madison, is the Museum of Contemporary Art. It is open Tuesday through Sunday and is free of charge to visit. The museum features 51,500 square feet of modern and contemporary art exhibits with a large, rooftop sculpture garden, children's classrooms and a lecture center. Couples can spend hours walking around and viewing the numerous pieces and also enjoy a rooftop meal together at the museum's restaurant.

Just southwest of downtown Madison is the Henry Vilas Zoo. The zoo, since it was formed in 1911, has remained completely free of charge to visit, a stipulation set by its founders. Couples can spend the day walking around the zoo checking out the wide range of exotic animals from all over the world including African lions, tigers, rhinos, and polar bears. The zoo and gift shop are open year-round, although food concession stands close during the winter.
