Common Term Paper Questions

A term paper tests a student's logic and writing skills.

A term paper, also known as a research paper, is a written report usually due at the end of a school term, class or semester, and is intended to test a student's writing skills and her grasp of the course subject material. If term paper questions aren't assigned, choosing one can be a daunting task. Many term paper questions -- which the report will attempt to answer -- have to do with arguing one side, or possibly both sides, of issues relevant to course material. Specific topics are thought to be better and easier to use than generic topics, and assertions made should be supported with facts.

  1. Social Studies

    • Some common Social Studies term paper topics could include: whether capital punishment constitutes cruel and unusual punishment; whether women in the military should serve in combat roles; whether gambling should be legal; whether cigarette smoking should be banned and so on. A student might take either side of the argument, or may even be assigned one side or the other, and tasked to defend it with all the tools of logic at his disposal. The best term papers are the ones that make a clear and logical case for the position argued.

    Journalism

    • Common term paper questions in a Journalism class include: Has the Internet made newspapers and TV news obsolete?; How has online social networking affected news reporting?; when should journalists not cover a breaking story?; should entertainment reporting be considered news? or should conventional news organizations accept amateur videos from individuals? The student might back up his argument by including opinion articles from prominent journalists or online bloggers or statistics tracking web hits or Nielsen ratings.

    Earth Sciences/Biology

    • Common Earth Science term paper questions are questions about topics like mandatory recycling, urgent environmental issues, the theory of evolution, global warming or saving endangered species from going extinct. The student might back up her assertions by using scholarly articles, newspaper reports or web interviews with prominent scientists.

    Health Sciences

    • Common Health Science term paper topics, or questions, include whether the Health Care Reform Law is beneficial to the uninsured, whether vaccines are safe for small children, which disease is most likely to be cured in the next 10 years, whether the nation's blood supply is safe and how health care costs can best be reduced. Supporting data could come from magazine articles, CDC publications or the FDA.
