Adapt A Bed
-
If your child has a standard bed already, there are some simple ways to create a more fun and themed sleeping space. Add a netting canopy to the bed, gauzy net for a girl, and military surplus camouflage for a boy. Hang it from a hook on the ceiling, and add bedding that matches, such as a camouflage comforter, or for a girl, a fluffy, ruffled duvet and skirt. Shaped pillows add to the theme, and you can dress up a plain headboard by stenciling it or using stamps and paint from a craft store to match the theme.
Build It Functional
-
For a small space, a loft bed is a great design that add practicality, room to work and study and even storage. Some simple tools, lumber, and easily found plans put you on your way to creating this great kid's bed. A loft bed incorporates the idea of a bunk bed, but utilizes the lower space for storage shelves, space for a desk or even a designated play area.

Storage Solutions
-
A headboard that is a bookcase, a pedestal beneath the bed that doubles as drawers or shelves or a daybed that doubles as a seating area are good solutions to small spaces with little storage. A book case can be easily crafted from furniture grade lumber to fit to the dimensions of the bed. A pedestal can be bought or built to hold a bed in place of a traditional frame, allowing for using that space under the bed for something besides dust bunnies.
Make It Fantastic
-
Build a castle, a race car, a fort or fire station. With some plywood, a jigsaw, some paint and a few tools and screws, your child can easily have the bed of their dreams. The design is drawn on a sheet of plywood, or several sheets, depending on the size. Cut it out, sand it, paint it, and attach to a standard metal frame for a simple-to-make bed that will give your child a fantasy space to sleep in for years to come.
