Adult Residential Colleges

There are 27 adult residential colleges that are members of the Adult Residential Colleges Association in the United Kingdom. These schools, which provide adults with short-term educational opportunities, are usually operated by local authorities or charitable trusts. Students stay at the college for a brief period, rarely as long as a week, and transcripts and other academic qualifications aren't needed to attend.

  1. Alston Hall

    • Alston Hall is about five miles east of Preston in the Ribble Valley. It's operated by the Lancashire County Council and provides attendees with many non-accredited courses such as Mozart and the Piano, Making the Most of your Voice and English Folk Dancing. Alston Hall is noted for its food and extensive gardens. The cost of each course depends on its length and complexity and is in addition to room and board.

    Braziers Park

    • An Educational Trust, Braziers Park was founded in 1950 on 55 acres of land south of Oxfordshire that are kept by the student volunteers as a continuing test of living as a group. Unlike other adult colleges, its courses are designed to give students the tools to reach their full potential physically, spiritually, emotionally and intellectually, and it integrates learning and teaching. Braziers Park also operates a bed and breakfast and rents part of its facility for celebrations and retreats.

    Dillington House

    • Dillington House is located in Somerset, in a 16th century house that's owned by the Somerset County Council. Its four-day courses are given throughout the week and the property is for rent for parties and events when courses are not held. Residential courses include everything from The Irish in London, Intermediate French and Ancient Greece: An Archaeological Introduction to Philosophy-Mind and Body, West Country Food and Abstract Painting-The Power of Color.

    Plas Tan y Bwlch

    • This college, in Gwynedd, Wales, focuses on providing information about the Snowdonia National Park and the area of Wales it calls home. Public courses are offered in a variety of areas, including Walking, Craft, Wildlife, History and Archaeology, Photography, and Painting and Illustration. Special interest courses include Chamber Music, The Night Sky, An Introduction to Permaculture and Fly Fishing. Plas Tan y Bwlch also offers courses for professionals and makes the facility available to groups from schools, colleges and universities.
