What is the Gurgle in the Toilet Tank?
A gurgling toilet tank signifies leaking water inside the tank. If the problem is not repaired, don't expect it to simply work itself out. The focal point inside the tank is the fill valve, which can have different designs, including having a float cup or a float ball. Regardless of its specific design, its job is to allow water into the tank. The fix, involving either adjusting or replacing the valve, is a basic toilet repair. Does this Spark an idea?

The Gurgle
-
The gurgling sound is caused by water inside the tank running over and into the overflow tube. The overflow tube is the hollow, vertical pipe arising inside the tank from the flush valve. The actual purpose of the overflow tube is to supply water to the bowl as the tank refills, to help replenish the water that exits the bowl during a flush. However, if the tank's water level is too high, the water will continue running over into the overflow tube, well after a flush.
Reason for the Gurgle
-
Water is supposed to refill the toilet tank up to a certain level after each flush, then stop. The amount of water that is allowed into the tank is determined by whatever level the fill valve is set to allow. This setting is adjustable. When the level is set too high, the water rises above the top of the overflow tube and flows over into it. Or, the fill valve itself could be damaged.

Fixing the Gurgle
-
A fill valve that is called a ballcock assembly uses a float ball on the end of an arm. Gently bend this float ball arm downward. This will set the water level lower. If the float ball is damaged or waterlogged, replace it with a new one. Other fill valves have an adjustment screw that you turn counterclockwise with a screwdriver to lower the water level. To set a lower water level for a fill valve that has a float cup, pinch the clip that holds the cup to a metal rod, and slide the cup and clip downwards.
Replacement
-
If adjusting the fill valve does not stop the water level from rising too high, install a new one. It is important to follow the right steps during the replacement process. Make certain you shut off the water to the toilet, drain all the water from the tank, and disconnect the water supply line before removing the valve. The replacements are inexpensive and can be obtained from a hardware or home improvement store.
