What Are the Salaries Pediatricians Make in a Year?
Pediatricians are a type of physician who treat children, from infants to young adults. Like all doctors, they must complete eight years of school and up to eight years of residency before practicing. Due to the high demand of the job and the level of training required, pediatricians earn some of the highest yearly salaries of all occupations in the United States.

The average yearly salary for pediatricians in the U.S. is $161,410, while the median salary is $152,240. Factors that may affect the salary of a pediatrician include his level of experience, the type of medical facility he works in and the area in which he lives.

Pediatricians are most commonly found in the offices of physicians, an industry which pays an annual average salary of $163,630. Those pediatricians working in general medical and surgical hospitals earn $159,570 a year on average, and those in outpatient care centers earn $171,300. Pediatricians may also be found in colleges, universities and professional schools working for approximately $111,500, while those working for the local government earn some of the highest wages an an annual average salary of $175,940.

Pediatricians living in Iowa earn some of the highest wages in the country, as the state's average pay for this occupation is $206,390. Nebraska comes in second with an average salary of $200,280 for pediatricians, and Minnesota, Arkansas and Kentucky follow with salaries ranging from $196,210 to $199,440. Massachusetts is the state with the highest concentration of pediatricians, but offers slightly lower than average salaries at about $159,390.
Outlook and Benefits

While this is a highly competitive field, pediatricians can generally expect a positive job outlook. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment for all physicians will grow 22 percent between 2008 and 2018. State University also points out that pediatricians may receive a "rather generous" benefits package, depending on their employer, and can enjoy good health benefits, paid vacation, tuition reimbursement and a retirement account.
