Class Reunion Themes

High school reunion themes should be nostalgic without forgetting the people attendees have become.

Planning a class reunion can be an interesting job for reunion committees. Finding a theme that will excite and unite classmates enough to want to come together again takes genuine creativity and a lot of hard work. A little brainstorming with the other high school friends on the committee can result in a vividly memorable event which will keep classmates looking forward to the next reunion.

  1. Choosing the theme

    • Class reunions are based on nostalgia. A good theme incorporates both "who we were then" with "what's going on now." Pick a theme important in current events that was also important to the class during school years. Use a theme that will relate to the widest number of class members as possible, for instance "Rock 'n' Roll Then and Now." Embed nostalgia related to the theme in all event details. By comparing the old with the new, the theme holds both nostalgia and relevance to the adults that students have become. For example, a picture of the Rolling Stones from high school may be accompanied by either recent pictures of Mick Jagger or a new band with high popularity.

    Coordinating Theme Details

    • Whatever theme you choose, the setting and activities should fit into the theme while adding a touch of nostalgia. Decorations should include both memorabilia from high school and current items. Literature, signs and announcements may include slogans and terminology students would have used in high school to describe items pictured. Target awards to the theme. For example, awards for a rock and roll-themed reunion might include "Most Concerts Attended," "Married a Musician" or "Most Successful Band Member." Music should include popular songs from high school years as well as current crowd favorites. The attendee dress code should mimic relevant high school ensembles.

    Choosing Theme Relevant Settings

    • Choose a setting relevant to your theme. Find a place that students will all remember if at all possible. For instance if your theme is "Rock 'n' Roll Then and Now" you may want to choose to have the main event of your reunion at building where students went to see local bands play. School gyms are good locations for many class-oriented themes. For an entertainment theme, a local pub may suit the mood. For more formal themes, consider the location where the senior prom was held.

    Invitation themes and details

    • Invitations should paint a clear picture of the theme of the event. Write a clear theme description and outline dress codes. Include a few representative "then and now" pictures so attendees can get a more solid idea of the theme and how they want to prepare. Whether you send full invitation packages by mail or just invitations which give quick details and a website URL, you will want to include registration polls which will allow you to choose event award winners and give you information for event activities. Give contact details and ask students to send any related memorabilia they are willing to share. Some respondents may have good ideas to share as well.
