Marriage Retreat
-
After a year of marriage the rose-colored glasses have come off and you may wonder who your partner really is. You may also just wish to fine-tune a good relationship and make sure you are both heading the same direction. Many places of worship either offer marriage seminars or retreats or support certain national marriage retreat organizations. The Chamber of Commerce can tell you if a marriage retreat or seminar is planned for your city. Local counseling centers can provide information. You can also look up national retreat organizations. Go with open hearts toward each other and with the goal of making a good thing even better.
Picnic for Two
-
Focus on paper. Pick up paper plates, napkins, cups and tablecloth all in the colors used at your wedding. Put together a meal with foods you both enjoy, even if the foods don't usually go together. Pack food, drink and dessert and head out to a quiet place. This may be the backyard, the beach, a park or a place in the mountains. Make your first anniversary for just two. As you eat, share memories of how you met, courted and married. Share good memories as you enjoy your paper anniversary celebration. If the weather isn't suited for an outdoors picnic, eat inside on the living room floor on a blanket. Create your own picnic spot.

Top of the Cake
-
On that first anniversary, take out the top of the wedding cake saved from your special day. Plan a special, formal meal that you cook together or have delivered. Set the table with your best china and silverware. Dress up in your best gown and suit as though attending an exclusive uptown affair. You are -- it is simply your own black-tie affair with the meal culminating in sharing, once more, your wedding cake.
Paper Trail
-
Create a paper hunt. Leave clues for your spouse to find. These might be all in your own home or different areas around town that you've planned beforehand. Each one reminds your spouse of your love and sends your spouse to the next clue. After all the clues are collected, have your spouse put them together to find a map on the back of where to head next. The last place is where family and friends have gathered to celebrate your first anniversary. Family and friends can also create the paper hunt, leading the couple to different places until they end up at the planned celebration.
Flowers and Jewelry
-
Start the day with flowers you present your spouse. During the day, include a note of love and remembrance. Follow up with a gift of jewelry as you celebrate your first anniversary at a favorite quiet restaurant.
