The grizzly bear is native to North America, which makes it a great topic for research.

The grizzly bear is a close relative to the larger coastal brown bear. The grizzly bear's name comes from the grayish tips of the bears fur, also known as grizzled. Grizzly bears are very interesting mammals and are commonly studied by elementary school students. There are many projects available for elementary school students to learn more about the grizzly bear.

  1. Shoebox Diorama

    • A shoebox diorama is an excellent project for elementary students to display the grizzly bear in its habitat. To make the diorama, the main feature should be the grizzly bear or bears, as they are often found together. The bear can be created using a paper drawing cutout, a picture print out, a clay model or a plastic figurine. From there, the student can create the bear's habitat by drawing it on paper and placing it in the back of the shoebox or molding it out of playdough or clay.

    What's For Dinner?

    • In studying the grizzly bear, the students will learn more about what the grizzly bear likes to eat. Provide the students with paper plates and have them draw or cut out of construction paper all of the various foods that the grizzly bear likes to eat. The grizzly bear's meals can then be displayed around the room. On this day, students can also bring in snacks that would be similar to foods that the grizzly would eat, such as nuts, berries and dried fruit to share with the class.

    Map

    • The grizzly bear is located in specific areas in the United States and Canada. Students can learn more about where grizzly bears are located by drawing a map or having them color in sections where grizzlys live on a provided map. You can also have them write down or draw what the climate is like in these areas.

    Grizzly Bear Mobile

    • A mobile is a fun way to involve many fun and facinating facts about the grizzly bear. The mobile can be made by hanging pictures on a hanger with colored yarn. Provide the students will lots of information, pictures and books on the grizzly bear to use as research material. The students can draw pictures of important facts about the grizzly, such as what they eat, where they live, how big they are and what they look like. The top of the mobile can be decorated with the word "grizzly bear."
