Celebrate your child's birthday with a cake he'll love.

The revealing of the birthday cake is one of the most exciting moments of a child's birthday party. Getting to that moment, however, can be overwhelming and stressful for many parents. With so many options available, it may be difficult to choose the perfect birthday cake. Keeping your child's age and interests in mind will help you select the right cake for any birthday party. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Princess Cake

    • Give your daughter a cake that is befitting of royalty for her fairy tale or princess-themed birthday party. Stack two 8-inch round cakes on top of each other and cover them with white frosting. Cut the shapes of a crown out of rolls of refrigerated sugar cookie dough and bake the cookie dough in the oven. Once cooled, press the cookie crown around the sides of the cake. Use colorful pieces of hard candy to represent the jewels in the crown.

Another option is to purchase a cake doll topper from a party or cake decorating store and place it on top of the round cakes. Use frosting that matches the color of the doll's dress to blend it into the cake. Decorate the cake with gel icing or pieces of candy.

    Sports Cake

    • Give your little sports fanatic a birthday cake that scores big. Cut the shape of a baseball cap's brim out of an 8-inch round cake and place it next to a dome-shaped cake that was baked in a 6-inch sphere cake pan to make a baseball cap. Cover the dome cake with one color frosting and the brim with another. Place six pieces of shoestring licorice that match the brim color evenly spaced on the dome cake. Place a gumdrop in the center of the dome cake where the shoestring licorice meet. Use gumdrops or other small hard candies to make your child's initial on the baseball cap cake.

Another option is to draw a picture of a ball from your child's favorite sport on top of a sheet cake using different color frosting and gel icing, or assorted candies.

    Novelty Cakes

    • Novelty cake pans allow you to turn your child's favorite interest into the cake of his or her dreams. Bake your favorite flavor of cake inside a fire engine mold. Once cooled, decorate the cake with red, black, yellow and white frosting. Bake a cake using a butterfly mold. Cover the top half of the wings with one color frosting and the bottom half with another. Decorate the wings with colorful candy and use shoestring licorice for the antennae. Use a treasure chest mold to bake your cake. Decorate the cake with two shades of brown frosting. Place gold foil-covered chocolate coins around the chest to represent the treasure.

    Cupcakes

    • Cupcakes are an alternative to traditional cakes and can be decorated the same way. Create baseball cupcakes by covering cupcakes with white frosting and using red gel icing to make baseball seams. Transform 12 cupcakes into a dozen flowers by using 12 silicone flower-shaped baking cups. Cover the top of each cupcake with your child's favorite color frosting. Use several milk chocolate candy pieces for the center of the flower and green shoestring licorice or a pipe cleaner for the stem. Create apple cupcakes by covering cupcakes with red frosting and using a chocolate-covered mini pretzel stick for the stem and green leaf-shaped gumdrop for the leaf.
