Performing Arts High Schools in Massechusetts
Performing arts is an important part of a child's education. Although these programs may not exist in every school, those parents wishing to expose their children to the performing arts have several options within Massachusetts. When considering which program to enroll your high school student in, consider several factors, including whether such a school is in your area, whether you child will be comfortable with the program and the various performing arts programs that exist at the school.

Walnut Hill School for the Arts

Located in Natick, Massachusetts, the Walnut Hill School for the Arts' mission is to "educate talented, accomplished and intellectually engaged young artists from all over the world," according to the school's website. The high school has a demanding curriculum which combines standard high school courses, including math, science, language, and English, with various artistic courses. Students can study ballet, writing and publishing, theater, or visual art. To be admitted to the program, students are required to submit an application, complete an audition or interview and submit a writing sample, among other requirements. Those students who cannot afford the application fee can apply for fee waivers. The school boasts several prominent alumni, including comedian Christian Finnegan, Broadway actor Matthew Risch and Elizabeth Bishop, a Pulitzer prize-winning poet.
Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School

Located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School serves 400 students in grades 7 through 12. Most of the school's students come from over 60 towns in western Massachusetts. According to the school website, the institution connects creative abilities with critical thinking. The charter school was first opened in 1996 as part of the Massachusetts Educational Reform movement. The college-preparatory curriculum includes courses in five departments: English and language arts; history and social science; mathematics; science; and world language. The school offers artistic courses in dance, music, theater and visual arts. The departments running these artistic courses prepare students to design and perform shows for various audiences, including members of the local community.

Boston Arts Academy

The Boston Arts Academy is the first high school for the visual and performing arts in Boston. The school's founders created it with the belief that artistic expression is just as important as academic success. The school enrolls approximately 405 students each year. Students specialize in one of five art subjects: visual arts, theater, dance, instrumental music or voice. In addition, students complete a college preparatory academic workload, including courses in humanities, mathematics, science and a foreign language. At the end of their careers at the academy, students are required to write a grant proposal to fund an independent community art project.
Wellesley High School

The Wellesley Public School system runs an entire performing arts department, integrating performing arts at each academic level. Students study performing arts beginning in kindergarten and continuing until they graduate from Wellesley High School. The high school is located in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The school enrolls approximately 1,294 students each year. Students can enroll in music, drama and dance courses. Students attending the performing arts department at Wellesley High participate in competitions and attend festivals with the high school's artistic groups. Students can study instruments, chamber music and jazz improvisation and participate in choral groups, among other activities.
