Needlework Alphabet Sampler Kits for Children's Gifts

A sampler is a piece of embroidery or needlework that follows a specific model of pattern. Some of the earliest samplers have been dated to the 16th century. The main purpose of the sampler was to show examples of specific stitches. The sampler contains alphabets, different designs and even pulled or cut thread work. Today there are many different types of samplers--some with pictures, and many geared specifically for children.

  1. Disney Samplers

    • Alphabet samplers that feature Disney characters are perfect for kids. These samplers contain Disney cartoon characters and, because they are geared to children, the charts are printed very large. Kits are available that feature Winnie the Pooh and friends, Lightning McQueen and fairies from Peter Pan's Neverland. Kits all come with needle, instructions, chart, fabric and presorted cotton thread.

    Floral

    • Floral alphabet samplers will contain the alphabet with different flowers and plants. These kits can be seasonal with rows devoted to only spring flowers or they can contain one specific type of flower (such as roses) or a large variety of different flowers. The flowers can be twined around the letters of the alphabet or simply used as a decorative border that frames and enhances the alphabet.

    Animal Samplers

    • There are many alphabet samplers for kids that feature different animals. Samplers can feature butterflies, bluebirds, insects, sea creatures, bunnies, insects, cats, bears and other animals. If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, consider making a sampler featuring that animal. Kits typically are not available for free, but you can take a free alphabet sampler pattern and create the kit yourself before presenting the needlework to your child.

    Holiday Samplers

    • Holiday samplers are very popular, particularly those for Christmas. Holiday samplers can have the alphabet as the main focus, or the Christmas decoration may be the central design with the alphabet letters being much smaller than the decorations. Other popular holiday alphabet samplers are for Halloween, Thanksgiving and July fourth.
