College Grants for the Grandchildren of WW2 Veterans

Grandchildren of World War II veterans nationwide grow up with stories of experiences in the Allies' fight against the Axis. The brave men and women who fought in the war did so to ensure better lives for themselves, their families and their descendants. As of 2011, very few opportunities for their grandchildren to get money for college exist on this sole basis.

  1. The Families of World War II Veterans Scholarship

    • One source specifically for grandchildren of World War II veterans is the nonprofit organization Families of World War II Veterans. As of 2011, it sponsors a one-time scholarship of $2,500 available to graduating high school seniors intending to pursue an undergraduate or post-graduate degree. The scholarship is paid directly to the college of choice with any unused funds returned to the organization.

    Marine Corps Veteran Scholarship

    • The grandchildren of Marine Corps veterans who served in the 4th, 5th or 6th Marine Division during World War II and who maintained membership in their organization are eligible for an undisclosed scholarship amount. The scholarship recipient must be able to provide documentation to prove their grandparent's affililation. The scholarship is available for students pursuing their first bachelor's degree and who can present financial need.

    AMVETS Scholarships

    • AMVETS offers scholarships to veterans and their families in general, though not necessarily specific to World War II. As of 2011, they award six $4,000 scholarships to graduating seniors as well as one $1,000 to a graduating senior in an ROTC program. They have partnered with the University of Atlanta, DeVry University, and the University of Phoenix for scholarship opportunities as well. As of 2010, Kaplan University (see Resources) offers a 10 percent tuition reduction program in association with family of AMVETS members .

Local High School and College Scholarships

    • Some local high schools, community colleges and universities offer scholarships to honor local veterans. As of 2011, for example, Beresford Junior/Senior High School in South Dakota offers a $500 scholarships to the grandchild or great-grandchild of a World War II veteran through the World War II Retired Teacher's Memorial Scholarship and a $1,000 scholarship through the World War II Veteran's Memorial Scholarship.
