Diamond Engagement Styles

Selecting an engagement ring is one of life's important decisions; after all, a woman will be wearing this ring for the rest of her life. With diamonds ranging from round to marquise to heart-shaped, choosing a ring also can be a difficult decision. Familiarize yourself with the different styles of rings before you go shopping and get an idea of the styles your partner likes and dislikes. If the engagement is a complete surprise, ask her friends and family for feedback on styles to ensure she will be happy with your choice.

Solitaire

The round solitaire is the most popular style of ring, according to Blue Nile. A solitaire consists of a single diamond set on a band of gold, silver or platinum. The diamond could be any shape from round to princess cut to heart-shaped.

Three-stone

A three-stone ring represents the past, present and future and has three diamonds of the same shape in a row. Typically the center stone is a bit larger than the other two diamonds.

Side stones

Another style of ring features a center diamond with smaller diamonds or other gemstones to the left and right of the center stone. The side stones may be a different shape than the center diamond or may extend all the way around the band.

Vintage

A vintage ring has more of a classic style and may feature elements like filigree details and more elaborate settings, according to The Knot. Although a vintage style ring may be an actual family heirloom or antique, modern rings also can be made in the vintage style.
