Simple Fire Fighter Costume Ideas
Visit any costume store, and you will find a variety of firefighter costumes. But the more involved or intricate the costume is, the more it costs. Making your own firefighter costume is not only cheaper, it shouldn't take more than an hour to complete. Simple firefighter costume ideas are appropriate for children and adults, provided you have the right items on hand.

The Jacket
-
One of the most important facets of your firefighter costume is the jacket, because firefighters typically wear a thick jacket that protects them. Make your own from a large black jacket. Look for a jacket that is a few sizes larger than your regular size, as you want it to reach mid-thigh if not down to your knees. Use black and silver tape to create the stripes typically found on the jackets. Cut the yellow tape in half and use that around the edges of the silver tape. Place silver tape around the hem of the jacket and then a few inches up, as well as around the arms of the jacket. Cut letters from the yellow tape, spelling out your name or the name of the fire station, and stick to the back of the jacket. For children's costumes, opt for a bright yellow rain slicker or rain jacket.
The Outfit
-
Pair the firefighter jacket with a plain pair of black pants or black cargo pants. Cover the pockets of the cargo pants with a piece of silver tape, using thinner strips of yellow tape along the edges. Add more tape to the bottom hem of the pants. Wear the black pants with black boots or thick-soled shoes.

Accessories
-
Visit your local toy store or costume store and purchase an inexpensive firefighter helmet. Make your own fire extinguisher from an old cylindrical container or thermos. Glue red and black construction paper to the outside of the container and attach a nozzle to the top. Or, simply carry an old vacuum cleaner hose as your firefighting hose. You can even carry the fire extinguisher from your own home.
Making Shirts
-
If you want to wear your jacket open, then make a simple T-shirt to wear underneath. Draw the emblem of your local firehouse on the front of a plain T-shirt, using a black marker. Or, check with your local fire station. The station may sell shirts similar to the ones worn by real firefighters, as a way to raise money for the station.
