A butterfly theme is perfect for a girl's nursery.

A butterfly nursery theme can be bright and colorful, especially when using colors like pink and green. Hot pinks and lime greens stand out for a girl's nursery. You can also use pastel pinks and greens as soft base colors for the walls, then use brighter designs that contrast and stand out. There are multiple ways to design and paint the walls for a butterfly theme, so choosing just one idea might take some time. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Base Colors

    • Before any other designs, you want to paint the base colors of the walls. If you choose a green and pink theme, you may want to paint all of the walls the same color or alternate, painting one wall green, the next pink, and then green again. Use a paint roller to paint the bulk of the wall in a "W" pattern, leaving about half a foot from the wall's edge left to be painted with a brush, so you can paint near the floor, ceiling and moldings. Once you have the base colors, you can paint the butterfly designs on top.

    Butterfly Tracks

    • One idea for a butterfly theme is to paint flowers, butterfly tracks and butterflies. Choose a paint color that will stand out from the wall's color and pick out a medium-sized brush to start painting the designs. From the bottom to middle of the wall, draw long-stemmed flowers with blooming petals, such as daisies or sunflowers, using a picture reference if needed. On the left or right side, paint a butterfly with wings spread, then paint small dashed lines from the body of the butterfly to show its flight path, or butterfly tracks. These dashed lines can be very whimsical and travel all across the wall. Draw other smaller butterflies spaced away from the larger butterfly to accent the flowers.

    Stencils

    • You can make your own stencils to paint different sizes of butterflies on the wall. Find pictures of butterflies from books, magazines or web images that you like, then pick the ones that are best for stencils. Then, print these out and take them to a local copy shop to be enlarged on heavier weight paper. Once you have your stencils, place them up against the wall and use a medium paint brush to outline the stencil in a color that contrasts to the wall's base color. Fill in the butterfly to make full-color silhouettes, or create your own butterfly wing patterns using a picture for reference.

    Wall Decals and Hanging Art

    • Once you paint the base colors and add any of the above designs, you can use wall decals to accent the butterfly scene so it pops out. Butterfly flock stickers from AllPosters.com come in different patterns and shapes to accent the wall above your baby's crib or changing table. Another idea is to use butterfly wall art, such as the butterfly 3-D wall art decor from Beetling. Bugs-n-Blooms also has nylon butterflies that hang on the wall, and they come in different sizes with soft layers, sparkling sequins and crystal beads.
