Mold grows best in moist, warm areas like the basement or bathroom.

Mold refers to a variety of fungi that grow both indoors and out. Potentially dangerous, mold can seriously aggravate allergies and respiratory problems in sensitive individuals. Using harsh chemicals to remove mold can further endanger the health of those in your household. Several non-toxic organic products will kill mold without lingering fumes and with the added benefit of cost savings. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Vinegar

    • Distilled white vinegar kills most types of mold. Fill a plastic spray bottle with undiluted vinegar and spray the vinegar directly onto moldy areas. Let the vinegar sit for about 30 minutes, then wash the area with a sturdy sponge moistened with more vinegar. Rinse the area clean with water. You also can use vinegar in a load of laundry to remove mold and mildew from fabrics. You should not use vinegar on natural stone, however, because the acidic nature of the vinegar will damage the stone.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is used as a natural antiseptic and immune-system booster. It can also be a remedy for mold. Mix 2 tsp. tea tree oil with 2 cups water in a spray bottle and shake it well. Spray the solution onto surfaces with mold, then wipe them down with a clean rag or sponge. You will detect an odor at first, but it will subside after a few hours.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria and mold spores. Pour a 3-percent hydrogen peroxide solution -- the concentration of most hydrogen peroxide solutions in stores -- into a spray bottle and spray the mold-covered areas. Let the hydrogen peroxide sit for about 15 minutes to disinfect the surface and kill the mold spores. Then wipe the area clean with a sponge dampened with hydrogen peroxide.

    Grapefruit Seed Extract

    • Grapefruit seed extract will banish mold and leave a fresh citrus scent. Put 20 to 30 drops of grapefruit seed extract oil into a spray bottle. Add 2 cups water and shake the bottle to mix the contents. Spray the mixture onto any areas affected by mold. Leave the mixture on the surfaces for 30 minutes, then wipe them down with sponge or rag.
