The Best Charities
According to the Better Business Bureau, billions of dollars are donated to charities each year. (See Reference 1) Most donors want to make sure that their their money is going to the actual cause and not just to cover overheads. Charity Navigator, an independent organization which evaluates over 5,500 of the largest charities says 75% of all donations to a charity should go to services and programs. (See Reference 2)

American Red Cross

This organization was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton. They assist people in storms, fires and other disasters around the world. They also receive blood for hospitals and teach lifesaving courses, such as CPR. The Red Cross receives billions in donations each year; it spends over 91% of its donations to its programs.
Habitat For Humanity

This organization was established in 1976. One of the most notable people associated with the Organization is Former President Jimmy Carter. Habitat For Humanity builds homes for the low income and homeless individuals.

Volunteers of America

This organization was founded in 1896 to assist at-risk individuals with healthcare, homes and other services. They have services in over 400 communities. Aside from their staff they have over 70,000 volunteers assisting those who are homeless, just out of prison, and persons with disabilities.
Point of Light Institute

This organization puts volunteers in over 250 communities around the world. They say their purpose is to inspire people and corporations to serve those in need. They have partnerships with large corporations such as eBay. Other components to their program are MissionFish and The Civic Incubator. They are currently running a joint venture with Americorps alumni.
