Summer Art Crafts for Kids
It's summer; the kids are out of school and need something to keep them busy and entertained. Take advantage of this time to get your kids out in nature while they create fun crafts. Choose crafts that teach your children something new while they're having fun.

Pine Cone Bird Feeder
-
Pine cone bird feeders are simple and the supply items are easy to find. You'll need a medium or large pine cone, which you can find in your local park or purchase from a craft store. You also need some peanut butter and birdseed. With a butter knife, or your fingers, put the peanut butter on the pine cone and then roll it in birdseed. Use newspaper and paper plates to make clean up easier. Tie a piece of yarn to the top of the pine cone, then hang your feeder in a tree and see how many different birds you can spot as they come to eat this yummy treat.
Nature Book
-
Explore a park or nature reserve. As you are walking, look for leaves, rocks, trees and other foliage. In a small notebook, have your child sketch or press the items you find, then have him write descriptions and information about where the leaf or other natural item was found. When you get home, look up the botanical name for the item. Document this and any other new information in the nature book. Continue to add to your book as you find new and interesting items.

Butterfly Sun Catcher
-
To make a butterfly sun catcher, you'll need black construction paper, colored tissue paper, glue, scissors and optional plastic eyes. Cut a large butterfly shape out of the black construction paper. The insides of the wings should be cut out, as well, leaving only the outer edges in black. Trace a pattern first to make it easier. Glue cut tissue paper to the back of the wings. Cut antennae out of the black paper and glue them onto the butterfly's head. If you want, add plastic "googly" eyes to your butterfly. Tape the butterfly to a window and watch the sun shine through.
Kool-Aid Finger Paint
-
This is a quick and messy project, perfect for summer fun. To begin, mix 2 cups flour, two packs unsweetened Kool-Aid, 1/2 cup salt and 3 tsp. oil to a bowl and mix. Add 3 cups of boiling water (adults only for this step) and stir the mixture until it cools. Once it has cooled, dip your fingers in the mixture and start painting. Wear old clothing, as this mixture may stain, although it should come out in the wash.
