There are a few important tasks that must be completed for the perfect wedding.

In every culture, a wedding is a reason to celebrate. The joining of two people and two families is certainly a joyous occasion. Indian weddings are grand occasions, often lasting several days. Depending on the customs and traditions of each family, there are many tasks, from choosing beautiful attire to hosting a fun reception, that must be finished before the big day.

  1. Tell the World

    • As with any wedding, it's important to let people know about the event and date early so they can make plans to attend. Be sure to tell family and close friends first, unless your family has given approval and already knows. For invitations, brides can choose either traditional or modern designs, depending on the style of the wedding. For example, if a bride will have traditional mehndi, the henna designs typically painted on the bride's hands, the invitation can match the pattern. It's important to begin shopping for invitations at least six months in advance.

    Choose Colors

    • Choose a color scheme that complements your skin type. Often, Indian brides often ask the women in the family to wear complementary shades of the same color, as long as they don't wear exactly the same color as you. Although most Indian brides wear red, there are many color choices.

    Sari or Lehenga

    • Indian brides traditionally wear sari or lehenga. A sari is a length of cloth, traditionally worn around the waist and over the shoulder. A lehenga is a blouse and skirt with a cloth worn over the shoulder. Both come in many colors, and in both traditional and contemporary styles. Choose attire that fits your wedding style. Accessories and hairstyles should match your style as well.

    Rituals and Customs

    • Indian weddings can come in many forms, depending on the couple's religious beliefs and customs. Families from different regions also have different customs. A Bengali wedding, for example, is long and elaborate, with ceremonies from before the wedding to a ceremony for the first meal eaten at the groom's house. A Buddhist wedding is very simple, and without elaborate ceremonies. Brides and grooms should speak with their family members and clergy to ensure all appropriate customs are followed.

    Sangeet

    • The Sangeet ceremony is an important custom for many Indian brides. Traditionally for women, it is a time to bless the bride, sing, dance and share stories. The Sangeet is typically planned by the bride's family, and snacks are served.

    Reception

    • Planning the reception includes choosing music, a Master of Ceremonies, food for guests and anything else the couple might find necessary. Traditionally, the reception is hosted by the groom's family.
