Writing a children's book can be rewarding.

Creating books for children can be rewarding both emotionally and financially. However, to write a children's book, you first need a unique and inspiring idea. Identifying the main story of a book is a necessary step in getting it written. If you find yourself stuck with writer's block, there are a few good places to go for excellent children's book ideas.

  1. Personal Experiences

    • Anything you remember experiencing as a child can make a perfect topic for a children's book. If you have unique experiences to which children can relate, consider using one as the story for your next book. For instance; if your parents went through a painful divorce when you were a child, finding ways to turn that experience into a powerful children's story can help other kids deal with the emotions they may face in a similar situation.

    Moral Lessons

    • Some of the most effective children's stories are written to teach a specific moral lesson. For example; if you see your children act greedy at times, create a story that covers some of the causes and eventual negative consequences of acting greedy. Any important moral lesson can be wrapped into a story, and the sky is the limit in terms of how you tell it. Find a moral lesson you think worth teaching and build a story around it.

    Other Books

    • You cannot re-write another author's book, but you can certainly re-interpret their idea and find a way to make it your own. If you read a children's book in which the main characters encounter a pack of fierce bears, consider writing a similar story but told from the perspective of the bears. There are many ways in which to interpret common stories or allegories and make them into unique narratives. As a rule, if you feel like your work is too close to the original subject matter, it is best to start over.

    Simplify the Complex

    • Children cannot understand complex concepts like the human circulatory system or how electricity works. Though they learn these concepts over time, you can help provide them with an introduction by writing books that simplify the complex ideas into concepts that children can understand. Look around for topics about which kids should learn such as history and science, and write a book that covers some of these topics in a more easy-to-understand fashion.
